This Won't Take As Long

I'm expecting this to be finished a lot faster than it took to finish Lynch...I hope.

Lynch

It's been a long journey and a bit of a uphill battle for me with this piece. A lot of care and attention to detail went into every waking moment spent while working on it. Not only does it depict one of my favorite directors (David Lynch) but I feel it also captures a very troubling yet interesting time for me. While working on this I managed to go through several ruts, fits of anger and even a lack of motivation/inspiration. A lot had to do with the fact that I just didn't have the time to sit down and think about the piece properly. These emotions and experiences are documented well within the picture and I hope you can see it all. Without it, I don't think it would've even come close to what I was aiming for. It's really interesting how much this effected me and how in the end, I was the one grasping at strings.

Falling Off The Horse A Bit.

It seems like every time I get a chance to write in this thing, I'm making some sort of excuse as to why I'm not updating it regularly. The truth of the matter is I keep hitting these massive blocks of inspiration and motivation that I just lack the energy to sit down and think of what to write or even what to draw. It's been very frustrating. I know it all stems from my job. Being part of what seems like a soul crushing environment doesn't really help the situation at all. But I'm dusting the cob webs off yet again and I'm hard at work at finishing several pieces. I'm going to do my best at trying to frequently update this thing. Oh and that food blog thing totally blew up in my face. My lunch's were just getting boring and I didn't see the point anymore. But I'm working on somewhat of a similar project that should be starting at the beginning of the year. So for now, here's a sneak peek at what I'm trying to finish. I don't even remember when I started this fucking thing. I just want to get it finished and move on. Which pains me to say because I actually really love this piece but fuck, I need to get my act together and FINISH IT.

Whats For Lunch? pt.3

Yet again, late on this one. Sorry. I seriously need to set reminders for these things. I feel like an old man sometimes. So for this installment, I didn't have much to work with. Actually, I didn't have anything to work with, so I got myself some subway. Believe me when I say, I really hate these days. I love my sandwich's as much as the next guy but there's just no love in these things. I guess it's time to hit up the super market.

Whats For Lunch?

I wanted to start this little experiment yesterday but really couldn't find the time to actually sit down and write this up. So I'm going to make up for it by making this a double shot. Now you're probably asking yourself, "What is he talking about?". Well, a few months ago I decided to document my life through the lunches I make. One picture, one meal, every day. The idea came to me while having a boring little lunch at work and trying to make it a little more enjoyable by making comments to myself on post-it's next to my lunch.

So the first entry was taken on my birthday which was Tuesday. Twenty-three years old and this is what I'm doing with my life. I didn't have anything fresh at home so I whipped something up using left overs. I had some left over papa rellena that my grandmother had made for me over the weekend and placed it with some left over steam rice, chicken and broccoli left overs. They both complimented each other quite nicely. I spiced it up by sprinkling a little seasoning on the chicken as well as mixing it with a garlic sauce.

For today I wanted to take it easy with my food intake since I ate like a pig the night before. It was my birthday so I didn't give a shit. I took left over veggie's with some ground turkey and mixed it together. I then prepared a little baggie with reduced fat Wheat Thins and placed on the side and had accidentally made a taco dish. It wasn't even planned but I was quite happy with the end result.

Well that's it for today. Hope whoever ends up reading this enjoys it. Let's see what I whip up for tomorrow! Probably something disgusting. See ya!

Touching up the sketch tonight. Still not done with Lynch. Almost there, I promise!

A Few Sketches To Hold Ya Over

The gears are turning. The cob webs are being shaken off. It's time to get back on track. The fall season seems to be helping out a lot. During my travels this weekend, I saw many Halloween items and holy shit did it put me in high spirits. So expect to see a lot of new stuff coming your way. Until then, enjoy some character sketches I did for a story I'm working on and a little doodle of Morpheus from The Matrix.

Life is hectic

Yes it is. Sorry for the lack of posts. Life has recently taken a sharp left turn. For the better I hope. I finished my Kurt Cobain piece a while back and tried to hang a shroud of mystery around it since you never really see his face. Part of me thinks the whole idea kinda backfired with the reception of the picture, but fuck it. The picture speaks for itself and I think it's something people will enjoy later on as it grows older. I tried a lot of new things with it.

When I look at it, I get this odd feeling. Not sure what to describe it as but its kind of unsettling and I love it for that. My own work is trying to scare me and it's working. It's making me excited again. I really hope this is the way people feel when they view my work. It's satisfying and unnerving at the same time.

I started working on 2 new pieces. One, which it's sketch was done within a few hours (which is relatively quick for me). And Two, which is still in its conceptual stages. I took a brief (maybe a week long) break from them to re-focus and see which dangerous path I want to take with them.

In other news, after 2 months of bitter self loathing and mind altering cabin fever, I've finally landed a new job. In a way I'm going to miss not being home all the time. It began to reflect in my work but also deprive me. It almost came to a point where I just wanted to take a very long break from everything as I started to hate my work. Loosing your job really fucks with ya. But now, I feel that those experiences along with this new opportunity will really change my view and what ultimately goes down on paper.

Now that that is all out of the way, it's time to have lunch because I'm getting a little cranky :(
I'll be back later to talk about "Slush" a little more.

Later

What one person can do, another can do.

So I'm talking to a good friend of mine over the facebook chat window. Just shooting ideas around at each other, talking about a few projects we want to work on. Characters and story lines, that sort of thing. I mention to him that next time we hang out, I want to show him some sketches of characters I have in my head-he had seen some earlier doodles but they were really rough. So he says to me, "I wish I could draw bro". Which is something I've heard from many people for most of my life.

I really hate phrasing it that way because it makes me seem like I'm gloating a bit (I assure you I'm not). I have much more of a self-loathing opinion of my work but I won't get into that. The truth is I've heard that for a long time and it has always bugged me when hearing someone confess that they can't draw or paint or just be creative in any way. I tell him "I believe everyone has the capacity to draw. The problem is people try to draw things realistically and thats not what drawing is about."

That little bit must have sparked some interest in what I had to say since he wanted to hear the rest of my theory. So I laid it out as simply as I can. "To me, drawing is like making a film. You don't try to film things the way they exactly are. You tell a story that is out of the norm. Something fantastic and magical. To me, drawing is a way to show people a different perspective of reality. When people who don't have the experience try to draw, they usually draw things exactly as the way they see it and thats where they fuck up. If you wanted to see things the way they are, then take a picture or open your fucking eyes. I think people need to embrace things from a different perspective and draw them differently. Lines don't have to be straight. The right colors don't need to be used. And you NEVER, EVER have to color inside the lines. Ever. Coloring inside the lines is for pussies"

Essentially, thats the essence of art. The magic of creating something. You're showing people a world through the view of a different lens. So to those who say "I wish I could.", fucking do it. If an idiot shmuck like me can, anyone else sure as hell could.

The Golden Bull Cometh

Had a really weird dream last night. Thought I'd share. So I'm at my cousins house on her birthday. She's turning 15 and her birthday happens to land on some sort of freaky pagan holiday. We're all in the house terrified because he just instinctively know that shes going to die and that shes cursed. Don't know why we know that, but in the dream it was just common knowledge. So I stuff her in a closet with her little sister and my sister, run downstairs and grab her father who is working on a painting. Not sure what he was working on but he grabs his gun and runs upstairs. I tell the girls that I'm going to run outside and find my car. But I have no idea where it is. The town for some reason is deserted, foggy and gray so I can't see a fucking thing. At this point we know whatever is coming for us, is coming quick. There's this unknown fear inside us all. I open the door and standing on the porch looking at me is a wolf and a golden bull. My uncle shoots at the golden bull as the wolf chases me inside. I'm trying to wave him away with my arm as my phone starts to ring. I try to fucking answer it, despite the fact that a wolf is trying to fucking maul me. At that point I woke up. Pretty gnarly eh?

It looks like shit outside.

Had a pretty awesome weekend except for Sunday. I did jack shit. Considering I have all this free time, you would think I'd be more productive. Anyway, I started work on my next piece. Having a bit of trouble but after a lot of reflection and somewhat of a mini mental break down, I think I'm ready to tackle it again. This time from a different perspective. I'm trying a lot of different things with my work this year. Should be cool to see how I progressed at the end of the year. I also have a side project in the work that I'll post up soon. I hope. Who fucking knows, I rarely keep my word about these things. I'm sorry. But hey, here's some early sketches of Lincoln for ya!

Long overdue post + LINCOLN!!!

My laziness is in full effect this month. I've had plenty of time for updates but just didn't bother. I apologize and will offer out handjobs for forgiveness. Anyway, I just posted my latest mixed media illustration, drawing, painting, what have you, featuring our sixteenth president. It's been done for a little over a week and no, laziness had nothing to do with the delay of its unveiling. Since it's a portrait of Lincoln and being the sophomore entry in my "Head Shots" (thanks John!) series, I decided to wait to the 14th to release it. The date holds a lot of importance to its release because its the same day that Lincoln was shot point blank in the back of the head. He didn't die until the following morning and I fully believe that the reason why the bullet didn't do him in sooner is because an eagle flew in front of the bullet, sacrificing itself in an attempt to save our beloved president. As american as it's ever going to get folks. But this isn't a history lesson. It's a look into the bleak last moments of a man who had too much on his shoulders and a look of "Oh shit.." on his face. Mr. Lincoln, you will be remembered. God bless you sir.

Work In Progress

Working on a new version of "Life: A Fairy Tale". I feel that I didn't work on it hard enough the first time I colored it. I guess thats because I wasn't using a tablet at the time and coloring with a mouse fucking sucks. Enjoy the preview.

New Project

Here's one of several new projects that I'm working on. This is a piece that I started around 2006, maybe even before that. It's begging to be finished. Stay tuned for some more snap shots.

Murder By Death Shirt Design

I've been waiting for a while to spill the news but I'm too impatient to wait for the right moment. After submitting my artwork to the Murder By Death/O'Death cover art contest, MBD contacted me and asked if they could use the design for a t-shirt. It's really fucking cool having your favorite band ask if they could use your artwork, so I said yes right away. I'll post a picture of what the shirt will look like when it becomes available to me. I'm assuming it'll be on a brown shirt but I'm not certain. Also, I decided on giving the piece a proper name as well, "Murky". Here's what it'll look like with just the Murder By Death logo and one without it at all.

See ya

Prints

Currently looking for a new print shop. I'm not too happy with the quality of my old prints anymore, or their paper selection. I need to find one soon too if I want to start having more shows in the summer. Any recommendations for a good print shop in NJ or NYC?

Come out to the coast, we'll get together, have a few laughs

So I'm flipping through the channels; about to go to sleep and I see that Encore is playing Bruce Willis movies back to back all night. I'm in fucking action movie heaven. Goodnight.

Presidential Orders

I finally got to finish the JFK picture I've been working on for weeks. I assumed it would have taken me waaaaaay longer to finish but to my surprised it was done relatively quick. At least compared to anything else I've worked on.

Presidential Orders

The original ink drawing, which I posted last week I believe, was design as a tattoo for my friend Fredo. There was no way I was going to let that just stay an ink drawing so I began to color it and gave it the treatment it deserved. I'm expecting a lot of negative feedback (content wise) but I honestly don't give a fuck. I'm looking forward to it. But to those who do enjoy it, thanks for the wonderful comments and keep sending me feedback. I love it. Night!

A little sketch

Here's a little practice sketch I was working on to get my juices flowing for the JFK picture. There's even a ghost from the murder by death piece somewhere in there. I need to shake off this cold fast :(

As you can see, I'm a little proud of myself as to how Superman came out. Maybe I'll do a full piece. Who knows?

JFK sketches

These are the sketches for a tattoo I did for my friend Fredo, which will ultimately become my next finished piece of artwork. The idea behind it comes from the song "Bullet" by The Misfits. I decided to show the process of how some of my work is created instead of just posting up the final product. I'll be doing this for a number of pieces (sadly not all of them) and will be posting up random sketches as well.

Art+Books

Working on a interesting tattoo design for my friend Fredo. It's his birthday today so Happy Birthday dude. Once I'm down inking it, I'm going to give it the full treatment and try some new stuff on it. Very Exciting.

I picked up Button, Button: Uncanny Stories and 7 Steps To Midnight today. Should be two very fun reads. I'm a big Richard Matheson fan and will probably post a mini-review of the books. I'm sure no one will fucking read it but hey, it's better than doing nothing all day right?

2009 has been awesome thus far

I've been meaning to update this for a while but I've been busy with work and other things. Hopefully writing this will put me in the creative mood and I can start working on some new illustrations. I have a few ideas floating around in my widdle head that should be interesting.

January has been an interesting month for me so far. I'm doing my first interview ever with an online magazine by the name of CARMINE. I also made a digital media tutorial for them that just teaches you the basics. I'll post a link to that stuff once it's available. I'm trying to get shows booked in the city which would be amazing. I've always wanted to have a show in the city, but right now I'm looking for show partners. I have something else in the works but I can't really say what it is just yet. Once I get confirmation, I'll post it.

Speak of the devil. My interview and tutorial got posted up!
